Bandara ini terletak di wilayah KM.10 Kecamatan Sukarame. Bandara Internasional Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II dioperasikan oleh PT Angkasa Pura 2. Nama bandara ini diambil dari nama Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II (1767-1862), seorang Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia melawan VOC-Belanda yang pernah memimpin Kesultanan Palembang Darussalam (1803-1819). Panjang landasan pacu (runway) Bandara Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II sehingga menjadi 11/29 berukuran 3;571 by 45 meter (11;716 ft × 148 ft), lebar 45 meter di atas permukaan Aspal sejak September 2014.
