In den frühen 90er Jahren als „Altstadtherbst Kulturfestival“ entstanden, verstand sich das Festival als Gegenentwurf zum klassischen Spartenbetrieb der öffentlichen Häuser und des klassischen Konzertbetriebs in der Stadt. Im Festivalzentrum auf dem Burgplatz, dem großen Theaterzelt, findet bis heute hochkarätiges internationales Programm mit Strahlkraft weit in die Region statt.
