Border X Brewing opened its doors on Dia de Los Muertos, November 2, 2013, near the US - Mexican border in Otay Mesa, San Diego. Established by David Favela, his brother Marcelino Favela and his two sons, Martin and Marcel. The concept was to create a brewery that celebrated and expressed our unique Mexican palate, ingredients and traditions through the modern craft beer tradition. Martin and Marcel were the brewers and were the ones who initially brewed our first Mexican Craft Beer, our famous Blood Saison. Inspired by the popular Mexican tea of "Jamaica" that used copious amounts of hibiscus flowers, the beer was a beautiful deep ruby red, famously tart and slightly sweet from the Agave nectar. It was a hit and the family never looked back. We consider it our duty and contribution to the craft beer scene to experiment and bring forward unique and innovative beers for a new craft beer public. This approach was rewarded with many medals but most importantly, a James Beard Nomination.
