2009年4月に スマイルとエイジ(世代)を合体させた造語の「スマイレージ」として結成。 インディーズ活動を経て、2010年5月 「夢見る15歳」でメジャーデビュー、同年「第52回日本レコード大賞」最優秀新人賞を受賞した。 2014年10月 3期メンバーの加入とグループ名変更を発表し、同年12月に「アンジュルム(ANGERME)」となる。 「フランス語のange(天使)とlarme(涙)を組み合わせた造語」で「天使のような優しい心で、色んな涙を一緒に流していこう。」という意味が込められている。 2017年に「ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL」に初出演以来、数々の音楽フェスにも出演。 メンバーの個性を活かした熱く勢いのある歌とダンスを中心に、魂のこもったライブパフォーマンスを届けるべく活動中。
