The Wilson Timber was established in 1856 by John .W. and Edith I. Wilson. The land on which it sits was purchased with money earned in the California Gold Rush. The 52 acre forest is located in Mills county, Iowa. Five generations of Wilson decedents have cared for this land for over 160 years. The timber is currently undergoing a revitalization process. Efforts include the logging of old-growth trees, removal of invasive species, and the planting of hundreds of new saplings in strategically chosen clear-cut areas. In 2020, after many years of labor-intensive "cut and spray" techniques, stewards will begin the use of controlled burns to aid in the removal of unwanted species and to improve the health of the forest and adjacent grasslands. Modern burning techniques will be used under the guidance of local forestry experts. The burns will follow the timing and conditions used by native Americans for centuries. Goat grazing to clear unwanted species is being tested in 2026.
