The 8am Media, currently the largest independent media outlet in Afghanistan with the widest coverage nationwide, was founded in Jawza 1386 (Solar Hijri calendar) (may 2007) by a group of prominent journalists and human rights activists. Its mission is to promote democracy and support the growth of political movements. Prior to the Taliban's return to power, 8am was printed in five major cities and distributed simultaneously in 20 other provinces across Afghanistan.
