Max Libertor was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles. His ragtime journey began during the pandemic lockdown when his father showed him a YouTube video of Tom Brier sight-reading the Super Mario Brothers theme. Something clicked that years of childhood piano lessons had never been able to unlock. Almost entirely self-taught, Max started by learning Brier’s arrangements, then dove deeper — into recordings, obscure sheet music, history, and the composers who shaped the music he was falling in love with. His dedication has earned him recognition throughout the ragtime world. Max was named Ragtime Kid at the 2023 Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival and has since performed at the West Coast Ragtime Festival and the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival. He is a two-time podium finisher at the Old-Time Piano Playing Contest and Festival and was recently selected as a 2026 From the Top Fellow. Beyond performing, Max is also a composer, arranger, transcriber, and multi-instrumentalist.
