Da studi effettuati (pubblicati su Scientific American) secondo il genetista Andreas Keller “l’olfatto di ognuno è un mondo unico e particolare”. In pratica, durante l'evoluzione dei nostri recettori olfattivi, per varie ragioni, si è determinata “una specie di situazione tipo codice a barre, dove ognuno però ha un codice a barre differente”. Negli esperimenti su un panel di 500 individui quelle differenze hanno generato a parità di input risposte notevolmente variabili: l’intensità andava da debole a forte, e la valutazione da piacevole a sgradevole. Infine, a queste scoperte, si è aggiunto uno studio dell’Università di Dresda, secondo cui su un panel di 1500 adulti a contatto con 20 diversi profumi, ognuno ha mostrato un “punto cieco”, cioè l’incapacità specifica a rilevare un certo recettore.
