歌手。UAとは、スワヒリ語で「花」という意味を持つ言葉。大阪府出身。母方の故郷は奄美大島。 1995年デビュー。「情熱」「悲しみジョニー」「ミルクティー」等のヒット曲を持ち、AJICOやUA×菊地成孔でも活動。2003年にNHK Eテレで放送された「ドレミノテレビ」では、うたのおねえさんとしてレギュラー出演。2023年には、UAが歌ったJR東海CM「会いにいこう」が話題になり、20年ぶりに新たに東海道新幹線のチャイムに使われる。ボーカリストとして様々なアーティストの楽曲にも参加。また映画、「水の女」、「大日本人」、「eatrip」にも出演。 また、α-STATION「FLAG RADIO」でDJを務めるなど、その活動は多岐に渡る。そんな幅広い活動と並行し、2005年より都会を離れ、田舎で農的暮らしを実践中。4人の子供の母親で、現在はカナダに居住。 デビュー30周年を迎えた2025年6月20日には30th Anniversary Year最初のリリースとなる配信シングル「Happy」をリリース。そしてデビュー記念日となる6月21日には、日比谷野外大音楽堂にて「30th Anniversary Live」を開催。 2026年2月18日には約10年ぶりとなるフルアルバム『NEWME』のリリース、そして全国ツアー『NEWME 026』の開催が決定している。
