I desperately wanted to be a Beatle, then Eric Clapton. North London at the time was a musical hotbed- boys at school had electric guitars, and albums, cooler accessories than singles- reverently examined, and if you were lucky, borrowed. In 1971 I moved to the college town of Cambridge, met Wave Alex Cooper, and soon, my future wife Lee, and Soft Boy Robyn Hitchcock. The Soft Boys made albums A Can of Bees, then Underwater Moonlight, which infests the coffee table books. Robyn went solo in 1981. Alex Cooper introduced me to Waves Katrina Leskanich and Vince de la Cruz. I developed my 'British upbeat pop pub rock' songwriting style. Early efforts were the Bible of Bop (credited to Kimberley Rew and featuring Soft Boys, Waves and American band the dBs), Shock Horror (credited to the Waves), leading to Katrina and the Waves and the 1985 single, the Rew penned Walking on Sunshine, and 12 years of touring and major label recording, aargh! In 1997 Katrina and the Waves won the Eurovision Song Contest (big in Europe) with Love Shine a Light (another Rew composition). In 1998 I teamed up with my singing, songwriting and bass playing wife Lee Cave-Berry to form Kim and Lee (wouldn’t still be making music without her). We were also both 20 year members of Cambridgeshire rock band Jack until the death of lead singer Roger Smith, and 12 years and counting members of the Wednesday Session house band, infesting various Cambridge pubs before going online thru the lockdown of 2020.
