The World Ocean Network (WON) is an international non-profit organisation mobilised during the International Year of the Ocean in 1998 under the aegis of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. Officially set up in 2006, it assembles : aquaria, zoos, educational organisations, science centres, natural history museums, media, and NGOs worldwide. WON promotes the Citizenship of the Ocean and a Blue Society, a vision based on the idea that many societal needs and challenges can be met by responsible management of marine resources and ecosystem services, development of innovative technologies and products generating employment and economic resources. Member of the EU4Ocean Coalition for ocean literacy, WON coordinates with Nausicaá the Youth4Ocean Forum supported by the DG MARE of the European Commission.
