PING SHOULD'VE DIED THREE TIMES. IT BURIED ITS RIVALS INSTEAD. It is June of nineteen eighty-seven, in Far Hills, New Jersey — the headquarters of the United States Golf Association. A man lays a golf club on a table, places its face under magnification, and measures the distance between two grooves. His name was Frank Thomas. He was the association's technical director — the man whose job it was to decide which golf equipment in America was legal, and which was not. What he finds, by his own method of measuring, is a violation. The grooves are spaced too closely together. The offending distance — the gap between legal and illegal — is roughly the width of a human hair. That measurement should have been the end of Ping. Instead, a stubborn Norwegian engineer dragged the USGA and the PGA Tour into federal court over $100 million — and made both of them blink. This is the story of the golf brand that should have died three times: the groove war, the death of its founder, and the dark times that buried nearly every rival it ever had. And why, alone among the great American clubmakers, Ping is still standing. Did you game a set of Ping Eye 2 irons back in the day? Tell me in the comments — which year you bought them, which course you played them on, and whether anyone ever grumbled about those grooves.
