Something I have recently been made aware of, repreatedly (ad nauseum in fact) is the true horror of the 'gendered slur'. The histrionic and hyperbolic reaction to such slurs is generally made by bloggers and commenters who, if you pick them up for either indulging in (or seemingly condoning) constant aggressive and abusive language that YOU find offensive, inform you that such 'tone trolling' is not at all tolerated and that it is bad form on your part to try and limit the terms or tone that others use. However, if you then use a word that THEY object to there is every chance you will get an immediate ban (PZ Myers operates such a draconian policy, for example) and any talk of 'tone trolling' is immediately forgotten about! Yes, if you detect some hypocrisy here you are not alone :) Of course the whole venture potentially leads to meltdown as an arms race of intolerance ensues. Immediately one realises a case can be made for 'wanker' being a similarly intolerable insult on the grounds the 'splash damage' (Myers term, I think) extends only to the subset of individuals who masturbate and does not, therefore, impact on all innocent parties equally. One has only to peruse the thread in certain forums (A+ springs immediately to mind), where argument and counterargument are made as the regulars pore over some seemingly innocuous term like 'crazy' to decipher any possible asymmetry in how it may be applied, and to whom, in less derogatory circumstances. Yet, I propose here, of all the myriad sources of insults that humans have trumped up, largely in a bid to goad and pour scorn on one another, nowhere else has such an egalitarian basket of terms arisen, as male and female genitalia equally fall under the hammer as wellsprings for our derision. Note: Or maybe that should be ***NOTE***: What this video is about is using gendered terms as slurs for individuals. Please do not conflate this with issues such as 'calling all women bitches' or anything of that nature. After all, the issue there, the GENUINE sexism there, results NOT from the fact that 'bitch' is a feminine gendered term (after all, is saying 'all women are dogs' anything but worse still?????) but the fact that you are applying a slur to an entire gender (just as you are when using the gender neutral term 'asshole' in the line 'all men are assholes').
