The mainstream narrative claims that impact investing can effortlessly deliver double-digit financial returns while ending global poverty. But what happens when the relentless pursuit of profit actively dilutes, compromises, and destroys real-world impact? Philanthropy has no market for impact, and no shared definition of it. Kevin Starr of the Mulago Foundation funds social entrepreneurs who can reach scale, and says impact investing mostly cannot. "Mainstream finance wants you to believe there is no tradeoff—that you can chase private equity returns and lift people out of poverty at the exact same time. But on the front lines, prioritizing market-rate profits almost always dilutes real impact. Today on TBLI Radical Truth, Robert Rubinstein sits down with Mulago Foundation CEO Kevin Starr to expose why your impact dollars aren't doing what you think—and what genuine impact funding requires." This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Starr's diagnosis is that funders are not accountable for impact, which is why money does not flow to the people best able to create it. Imagine, he says, a commercial world where profit did not matter to investors. His answer is a set of tests he applies before writing a cheque, and two questions almost nobody asks early enough: who does this at scale, and who pays for it at scale. Kevin Starr trained in medicine and fell into philanthropy after a mentor died while they were working together in Bolivia in 1993. He now leads the Mulago Foundation in San Francisco, twelve people deploying roughly 25 million dollars a year in grants and investments, through the Rainer Arnold and Henry Arnold fellowships. WHAT'S COVERED - Why unrestricted funding does not mean no numbers, and how that differs from trust-based philanthropy as commonly practised - The four enoughs: good enough, big enough, simple enough and cheap enough, and why simple means simple for your doer - The doer at scale, and why you only ever have three options: government, NGOs or business - The payer at scale, and the same three: customers, governments, or big aid - The actual numbers: 100,000 dollars for a fellow, 250,000 a year in the portfolio, surge grants that double it - Screening 800 organisations for twenty places, using a one-pager and three or four phone calls - Why he thinks funder accountability, not funding volume, is the fundamental problem - Whether profit and impact are inextricably aligned, and what he means by greedproof - Why 90% of what is called impact investing is sitting at market rate and unavailable for this work - Cook stoves: give away the stove nobody can afford, sell the pellets, and why the first attempt went bust In this episode of TBLI Radical Truth, Robert Rubinstein sits down with Kevin Starr, CEO of the Mulago Foundation. Drawing on decades of funding high-impact solutions in the world's most vulnerable regions, Starr pulls no punches on the myth of easy market-rate impact, why the obsession with profit compromises genuine poverty alleviation, and what it actually takes to fund scalable, lasting change. 00:00 - The Impact Myth: Why Profit-First Thinking Dilutes Real Solutions 07:30 - Meet Kevin Starr: Decades at the Helm of the Mulago Foundation 18:15 - Market-Rate Returns vs. Real Poverty Alleviation: The Uncomfortable Tradeoff 30:40 - Why Most Impact Investing Fails to Reach the Deepest Need 42:25 - The Four Questions Every Genuine Funder Must Ask 54:10 - The Unfiltered Blueprint: Funding for Scale and Measurable Impact 📌 Subscribe to TBLI Radical Truth for unfiltered, deep-dive discussions with sustainable finance challenging the conventional narratives around impact and the future of finance. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDBhRVM93uUnAAtqOMIz_yg?sub_confirmation=1 EXTRACTION How business takes your money, your work, your resources, your data and your future, while presenting itself as something else entirely.
