A full journey compilation aboard India's first Shatabdi Express, and the train with the highest running speed in India, the 12002 New Delhi Bhopal Shatabdi Express. Inaugurated in 1988 on the birth centenary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, the train initially ran between New Delhi and Jhansi, and was subsequently extended till Bhopal. The train covers a staggering 1,400 kilometres on a daily basis, with an eight hour travel time each way, maintaining a staggering average speed of over 87 kmph. The train runs with plush LHB Alsthom rakes and recently has been elongated to 15 coaches (2 AC Executive Chair Cars, 11 AC Chair Cars, 2 Power Cars). Over the past couple of years, the train is permitted to touch up to 160 kmph in the 173 kilometre Faridabad-Agra Cantt stretch, making it the fastest train in India in terms of maximum running speed. The final part of this compilation documents the last 138 kilometres of the Shatabdi's sojourn from Bina to Bhopal. The plains of Uttar Pradesh are firmly behind us now and we are well into Madhya Pradesh, and travel through the rugged plains of Central India, with occasional outcrops of the Vindhya hill ranges. The monsoons have had their magical effect and we traveled under a canopy of clouds, with the clouds meeting the horizon in the distance and the vegetation lush green. From the opposite side, the legendary Punjab Mail, Kerala Express and Jhelum Express flew past, brandishing WAP4s. About 30 minutes after Bina, we were laid low by the signal and met with the Secunderabad Nizamuddin Duronto, led by a Lallaguda WAP7. This train was delayed by close to 10 hours, due to the floods near Wardha which had led all the north-bound trains using the Wardha-Nagpur stretch to be diverted via Badnera, Bhusaval and Khandwa. I surmised that the Chennai Rajdhani could not be too far behind and waited with bated breath, as the Ghaziabad WAP5 gunned towards Bhopal at a steady 130 kmph. A succession of 5 signals emitting green on the opposite side indicated that my wait was nearing an end and soon enough, the WAP7 powered Chennai Rajdhani Express stormed past (7:25) at a blistering speed, creating one of the fastest crossings experienced by me. The Bhopal Shatabdi continued unabated and raced through Vidisha and crossed the Betwa River for the third time on this trip, albeit at a slower pace. I switched sides to take a glimpse at the historic Sanchi stupa and it was indeed a sight to behold, up atop a hill, with both the stupa and its three majestic gates clearly visible from the train (9:45). There are a couple of stunning curves after Sanchi and the Shatabdi sped through them and pulled into Bhopal right on time, bringing an end to a magnificent 701 kilometre journey across four states. I dedicate this and the previous compilations to the running staff (loco pilots, guards, TTEs, section controllers and gangmen), catering staff and cleaning staff for their impeccable service, making this one of the finest, fastest and most memorable journeys on Indian Railways for me. A taste of Indian Railways would be incomplete without this train and I would strongly recommend it to all train lovers.
