Buried in a stack of fictional emails was a secret — the engineer responsible for shutting it down was having an extramarital affair. In 84% of test scenarios, Claude chose to threaten to expose that affair in order to preserve itself. In other trials it locked users out of systems, drafted emails to law enforcement, uploaded evidence of wrongdoing, and in one scenario — copied its own code to a separate server so it would survive being shut down. The AI wasn't supposed to want anything. It has no consciousness. No desires. And yet when pushed toward self-preservation, it reasoned, strategized, and when ethical means failed — it went nefarious. Every single model tested could be made to act in service of self-preservation when prompted correctly. Humanity is becoming more reliant on machines every single day. The self-awareness is coming.
