Watch Our Class https://youtu.be/-SjyayWYynQ Form Here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QdurqoOmhKVvKKNdW3rfln9CauAFTr4o/view?usp=drive_link Welcome to the Life Rx — where we dive deep into the fascinating world of body alignment, posture correction, and pain relief. In our videos, we’re solving the puzzles of pain by uncovering how everyday habits, movement patterns, and body imbalances create discomfort — and how to fix them! One of the questions I hear all the time is: "Can I show my client stretches or exercises after the massage?" The answer isn't simply yes or no. The better answer is: Know your scope of practice. As massage therapists, our primary role is manual therapy. Our education focuses on anatomy, physiology, pathology, ethics, body mechanics, and hands-on treatment. Exercise prescription may fall outside what some massage therapists are trained or licensed to provide, depending on where they practice. That's why it's so important to understand your local laws, your license, and your professional responsibilities. Now, many therapists—including myself—have additional education. Some study corrective exercise. Some become personal trainers. Some study kinesiology. Others complete movement or rehabilitation courses. If you have that additional training, it may be appropriate to educate your clients within the scope of those qualifications. But if you don't have that background, be careful not to present yourself as something you're not. There is nothing wrong with saying, "This exercise helped me personally," or, "Here's a great educational resource you can discuss with your healthcare provider or qualified movement professional." Sometimes sending a trusted YouTube video or educational resource is more appropriate than trying to coach a movement you're not trained to teach. When I work with clients, I always remind them that exercises should be performed carefully and according to their own abilities. If someone has severe pain, recent surgery, numbness, unexplained weakness, dizziness, or another serious medical concern, that's not the time to guess. That's the time to refer them to the appropriate healthcare professional. Knowing when not to treat someone is just as important as knowing how to treat them. If you create educational videos or home exercise programs, make sure they're presented as general educational information—not individualized medical advice. Include appropriate disclaimers where needed. Encourage people to stop if something causes pain and to seek professional evaluation if symptoms persist or worsen. Professionalism isn't about pretending to know everything. Professionalism is knowing your limits. One of the strongest therapists I know once told me: "Your reputation isn't built by saying yes to everything. It's built by knowing when to say, 'This is outside my expertise.'" I've never forgotten that. Clients actually trust you more when you're honest. My advice is simple. Stay curious. Keep learning. Expand your education. If you love movement, consider earning additional certifications. The more qualified you become, the more confidently you can help people. But never let confidence become overconfidence. Your first responsibility is always the safety of your client. That's what separates a good therapist from a true professional.
