Guidelines suggest residents can set out an unlimited amount of bulky items to be collected free of charge. As you can imagine, a lot of people take advantage of this program. The setouts range from your modest pile of bulky items, entire yard sales of junk, tree trimming or removal being scheduled the week before, to even a couple homes that had been completely gutted for a remodel, with contractors avoiding hauling costs by stacking at least a 40yd roll off’s worth of C&D material at the curb. This egregious amount of material had most streets looking like a post-hurricane cleanup scene out of the south. Since MT can’t handle this volume alone, a majority of the work is contracted out to 3rd party demolition haulers in the area, who bring out end-dump semi trailers and CAT loaders. Mission Trails themselves only seem to cover select areas of the routes using this fleet of ancient rear loaders that have likely been saved over the years specifically for this reason. Mission Trail converted 7 of their Volvo side loaders into rear loaders about 15 years ago, repurposing a combination of 1980s EZ Pack Goliaths and Dempster Route King II’s from other retired trucks. Before the rebody, the trucks you see here came in the form of Heil Formula 7000s and split body McNeilus Autoreaches. These trucks now hold a special registration with the state as they are used so seldomly. We found 6 of their 8 rear loaders working the cleanup that day. It appears the lone Crane Carrier/Dempster was sitting in the yard as a spare, though that would have also been a treat to see. How it took this long for someone to unearth this little known Bay Area secret baffles me given how many people film trash trucks around there nowadays. All in all, it was 100% worth the 11 hour round trip drive from SoCal to finally film some trucks that well deserve the spotlight of Youtube. Be sure to keep a lookout for full videos of the trucks seen in this video from myself, but likely sooner from WasteManTony and Western State Garbage Trucks. Shoutouts go to VVSmaster for confirming these trucks were still around and to Mario on truck 106! Hope everyone enjoys the video!
