A dam was planned on the Delaware River. Homes and land were acquired before construction began. Then the Tocks Island project collapsed — and the dam was never built. The proposed Tocks Island Dam would have created a reservoir stretching roughly 37 miles through the Delaware Valley, along the Pennsylvania–New Jersey border. But escalating costs, engineering concerns, environmental opposition, and a breakdown of political support stopped the project. In 1975, the Delaware River Basin Commission voted 3–1 against moving ahead with construction. The federal representative abstained. Congress finally deauthorized the dam in 1992. Much of the acquired land became part of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, leaving a protected river valley and a complicated human legacy. How should a country make amends when a megaproject displaces residents — and then never happens? DEAD SYSTEMS explores the real stories behind ambitious infrastructure plans, abandoned projects, and the places they permanently changed. **Research and historical sources:** National Park Service — The Tocks Island Dam Controversy: https://www.nps.gov/dewa/learn/historyculture/tocks-island-dam-controversy.htm National Park Service — Forming & Managing the Park: https://www.nps.gov/dewa/learn/historyculture/forming-managing-the-park.htm Delaware River Basin Commission — Milestones: https://www.nj.gov/drbc/about/accomplishments.html U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — Flood Risk Management history: https://www.nap.usace.army.mil/portals/39/docs/history/text.pdf **Sound effect credits:** “Looping Gentle Wind Ambience on an Open Desert Plain.wav” — dhallcomposer — https://freesound.org/s/697217/ “wind MS.wav” — wrinex — https://freesound.org/s/72563/ “Forest, Winter, Light Wind” — Kinoton — https://freesound.org/s/352436/ Additional recording: Freesound ID 553733 — https://freesound.org/s/553733/ #TocksIsland #ForgottenHistory #DeadSystems
