Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace is a pioneering defence technology and manufacturing firm headquartered in Electronic City, Bengaluru, dedicated to advancing India's indigenous military aviation sector. Founded by Suhas Tejaskanda, the company holds the distinct honour of being the first Indian enterprise to secure DGCA type certification for indigenous unmanned aircraft technology. Driven by a philosophy of complete self-reliance and the Make in India initiative, the organisation is building a comprehensive ecosystem of autonomous airpower that eliminates the need for foreign systems or remote-control pilots. Their platforms are governed entirely by sophisticated onboard artificial intelligence, allowing aircraft to navigate, make tactical decisions, and complete complex missions independently, which significantly reduces human casualties and safeguards operational sovereignty without the vulnerability of foreign kill switches. The centrepiece of their tactical aerospace portfolio is the FWD Supreme, an advanced AI-piloted fighter jet platform engineered for extended-range autonomous combat. Designed to eventually replace human pilots in highly contested environments, the FWD Supreme programme encompasses multiple variants capable of executing intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions. The technology demonstrator lays the foundation for operations at high subsonic speeds, whilst the subsequent phases of the programme are targeting supersonic performance approaching Mach 2. The airframes are constructed using aerospace-grade carbon fibre composites, meticulously fabricated in-house through advanced layup and vacuum bagging techniques, ensuring structural integrity under the immense gravitational forces of aerial combat manoeuvres. Complementing Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace's jet programme is the flagship Kaalbhairav series, an incredibly robust family of unmanned aerial vehicles designed for medium-altitude, long-endurance operations. So far, Flying Wedge has logged more than 100 hours of Kaalbhairav flight time. The Kaalbhairav Lite is a versatile autonomous combat aircraft featuring a maximum take-off weight of 100 kilogram and a wingspan of 4.4 metres. It can carry a 25-kilogram payload, operate for up to five hours, and is capable of both short take-off and landing or catapult launches. Scaling up significantly, the Kaalbhairav Heavy represents India's first fully autonomous combat aircraft of its size, boasting a massive 1,000-kilogram maximum take-off weight and a 14-metre wingspan. Built for extended endurance, the Heavy variant can loiter for 15 to 24 hours while carrying a formidable payload of 200 to 350 kilograms, operating effectively across a 2,000-kilometre range. Beyond traditional unmanned aerial vehicles, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace has developed highly specialised interceptors and loitering munitions for precise tactical engagements. The FWD-LM is a compact, pneumatically launched loitering munition with a maximum take-off weight of just 12 kilograms. Designed for precision strikes, it carries a 2.5-kilogram payload, boasts an endurance of 90 minutes, and operates effectively over a 25-kilometre range, having proven its reliability during high-altitude testing in the Himalayas. For aerial defence, the organisation manufactures FWD YAMA, a dedicated interceptor designed to neutralise enemy drones mid-air. Utilising electro-optical and infrared payloads alongside radar and optical terminal guidance, FWD YAMA reaches maximum speeds of 252 kilometres per hour to track and eliminate hostile targets within an 8-kilometre operational radius. The overarching intelligence behind these platforms is developed at the company's Centre for Autonomous Defence Research. Here, engineers design the cognitive autonomy stack and computer vision pipelines that empower the aircraft to detect, classify, track, and eliminate targets seamlessly. This system utilises complex algorithms and swarm logic, enabling multiple aircraft to communicate in real-time, regroup dynamically, and maintain formation without requiring a centralised human commander. To support this massive scale of technological ambition, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace is expanding its manufacturing footprint beyond Bengaluru, constructing a massive 500-acre integration and testing facility in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. By sourcing jet engines domestically and designing their own bespoke landing gear, avionics, and composite structures, the company achieves unparalleled indigenous content, solidifying India's position as a global leader in autonomous military aviation.
