In this session aboard Quality Time, Mick and I headed into Southampton Docks to target Rays and Dover Sole, fishing two productive Solent marks and testing out rigs, baits, and tactics that consistently catch fish in Southampton Water. If you’re searching for where to fish in the Solent, how to catch Rays, or best rigs for Sole, this video is loaded with real‑world action and practical tips. We started at the well‑known Gimp Buoy, a classic Southampton Water mark that regularly produces school Bass, Smooth Hound pups, and Black Bream. The Bass were relentless, smashing ragworm and robbing baits, but the Bream came through strong — we landed six quality Black Bream, proving the mark was alive with fish. Despite targeting Rays with bigger baits, none showed, but the variety kept the session exciting. Just when we thought the Sole weren’t feeding, the final cast delivered — a lovely Dover Sole, caught on a boom rig fished across the tide. It wasn’t the Ray we were hunting, but it was still a great result for the species list. For anglers wanting rig and bait details, we used booms across the tide, Cox & Rawle size 6 scratching match hooks, and 3oz Shorecast glow weights with ragworm for Bream, Bass, and Sole. For Rays, we switched to 3‑down rigs with size 2 Cox & Rawle specimen hooks, baited with mackerel, squid, and bluey — perfect for Rays even though they didn’t show this time. If you’re looking for Solent fishing tips, Southampton Water marks, how to catch Sole, best Ray rigs, or night fishing in Southampton Docks, this video gives you everything you need to improve your results
