The new 8.3L Duramax diesel coming to GM HD trucks for 2027 is going to be an absolute monster. With 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque, I have no doubt this thing will pull a heavy trailer incredibly well. But there’s another side to this engine: emissions complexity. The new Duramax uses two DEF injectors, multiple SCR stages, a new low-temperature DPF system, an updated EGR system and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) directly downstream of the turbo. That’s a LOT of emissions equipment surrounding an already very complex modern diesel engine. Then look at GM’s updated 6.6L L8S HD gas V8 for 2027. You obviously give up that massive diesel torque and the effortless pulling power of the 8.3L Duramax, especially with serious weight behind the truck. But you also eliminate the diesel aftertreatment system entirely — no DEF injectors, no SCR system, no DPF and no diesel EGR system to worry about. And that’s where I think the gas engine starts making a LOT of sense. If you're regularly towing 15,000–20,000+ pounds, that 8.3L Duramax is probably going to be incredible. But if you don’t need that capability and only tow occasionally, I think the naturally aspirated 6.6L L8S gas V8 could be the better long-term ownership choice.
