More than 100 million Egyptians live on just 4% of their country. Now Egypt is building a 310-kilometre “second Nile” through the Sahara. Known as the Toshka Project or New Valley Project, this unfinished megaproject is designed to carry Nile water from Lake Nasser deep into Egypt’s Western Desert, transforming barren land into farms and new communities. At its center is a colossal pumping station containing 24 vertical pumps. The system can move approximately 1.2 million cubic metres of water per hour, lifting it nearly 50 metres before releasing it into an enormous concrete-lined canal network. This engineering documentary reconstructs the extraordinary construction process—including approximately 80 million cubic metres of canal excavation, concrete lining placed in 50-degree Sahara heat, 320 kilometres of buried irrigation pipeline and massive center-pivot machines designed to cultivate the desert. But the project is not finished. Approximately 250 kilometres of the planned 310-kilometre route have been constructed, while another 60 kilometres must still cross some of the Sahara’s most difficult terrain. Completed sections are already supplying enormous irrigated farms producing wheat, cotton, sugar beet and dates in places that were previously empty desert.
