What would you do if someone suddenly collapsed in front of you? At a bus stop, railway station, shopping mall, hospital, or while standing in a long queue? A simple first aid technique could make a life-saving difference! During my visit to the IMEP Nipro Training Center in Bangkok, Thailand, I had the opportunity to explore advanced medical simulation technology, including a highly sophisticated mannequin with a beating heart and pupils that respond to light. These advanced simulators are used to train medical students, dialysis technicians, nurses, and even nephrologists in managing real-life medical emergencies. Using this mannequin, I demonstrate one of the most important first aid techniques everyone should know — how to help someone who suddenly faints (syncope). 🩺 What is Syncope? Syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness caused by reduced blood flow to the brain. It is often followed by spontaneous recovery, but the underlying cause must be evaluated, as some causes can be serious. ✅ What Should You Do When Someone Faints? 1. Gently lay the person flat on their back, provided it is safe to do so. 2. Elevate their legs approximately 30 cm if there is no suspected injury or other reason to avoid it. 3. Loosen tight clothing and allow fresh air. 4. Check whether the person is breathing normally. 5. Allow them to recover gradually without immediately making them stand or sit. 6. Seek medical evaluation, particularly if this is their first episode or the cause is unclear. This technique of lying flat with the legs raised can help improve blood return to the heart and support circulation to the brain. It is sometimes confused with the Trendelenburg position, but routine steep head-down positioning is not recommended. ❌ Common Mistakes to Avoid: - Do not immediately make the person stand or sit upright. - Do not throw or splash water on their face. - Do not slap or shake them to wake them up. - Do not give water or food while they are unconscious. - Do not assume every collapse is a harmless faint. 🚨 IMPORTANT: If the person remains unresponsive, call emergency services immediately. Check their breathing and start CPR if they are not breathing normally. If they are breathing but remain unconscious, position them safely to maintain their airway, taking possible injuries into account. ❤️ My Message to Everyone Medical knowledge should not remain confined to hospitals and medical colleges. A student, shopkeeper, bus conductor, teacher, parent, or ordinary citizen can make a tremendous difference by learning basic first aid. You don't need to be a doctor to help save someone's life. You just need the right knowledge at the right time. Through the Kidney Warrior initiative, my mission is to make medical education simple, practical, and accessible to everyone. Our vision is an India Free From Dialysis, and a society where every citizen is empowered with life-saving health knowledge. 🙏 Watch this video, share it with your family and friends, and help spread awareness.
