In August 1590, John White sailed back to the colony he'd left three years earlier on Roanoke Island -- looking for his daughter and the granddaughter he'd never met. He found a fort with no one in it. No bodies. No graves. No sign of a fight. And on a post of the palisade, one carved word: CROATOAN. This video sticks to the record: what's documented (John White's own map and watercolors, the 1590 de Bry engravings, the British Museum's patched map and its hidden fort symbol found in 2012), what's been argued (the First Colony Foundation's Site X and Site Y digs near the Chowan River; the Croatoan Archaeological Society's finds on Hatteras Island), and what's flatly unproven (the Dare Stones, most of them since judged a hoax). More than four centuries later, not a single colonist has ever been identified in the ground. And today, it's still unexplained. If you want more real stories that never got a clean answer, subscribe -- I post a new one every week. Because some stories are still unexplained.
