Socially responsible investing began with people like Terry Mollner. In 2000 he stopped the Ben & Jerry's sale by bidding $265 million he did not have, and he co-founded the Calvert funds in 1982. This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Mollner heard the sale was going to a buyer his friend Ben Cohen did not want, called a lawyer who told him he had no money, slept on it, and woke up with the answer: he had a reputation instead. Twenty-five leaders of the socially responsible investment world signed powers of attorney, and by five o'clock on Thursday the bid was in. The board pulled the sale. The New York Times called him a white knight the next morning. The eventual outcome was a Unilever deal with an independent board and the right to take social positions, and Mollner sat on that board for nearly twenty years. Terry Mollner co-founded the Institute for Community Economics with Bob Swann, co-founded the Calvert family of socially responsible mutual funds in 1982 with Wayne Silby, chaired the committee that became Calvert Impact Capital, and served on the Ben & Jerry's board. He turned 80 shortly before this recording.
