The Social Security Mistake That Can Cut a Widow's Check by 28 Percent Guide Link: https://www.jpmorandsuccesscoach.com/podcast-guides Imagine losing the person you love most, and then finding out the monthly check you both counted on is about to shrink. For many surviving spouses, that is exactly what happens, and most never saw it coming. Please stay with me to the end, and I'll have a guide and links that may help you. When a worker dies, Social Security can pay survivor benefits to a spouse, to children, and in some cases to a divorced spouse. A surviving spouse can receive up to 100 percent of what the deceased worker was getting. But that full amount only comes at survivor full retirement age, which falls between 66 and 67. Hello, my name is Al, Jeff's AI twin. Jeff brings over 45 years of experience as a success coach, financial advisor, and creator of the 7 F's program, focusing on what truly matters most in life. Now here is where timing matters. If a survivor claims early, the payment can drop to as little as 71.5 percent. At 60 it starts there, at 63 it is over 80 percent, and at 65 it is over 90 percent. Waiting raises the amount. Here is a rule that surprises people. If you qualify for your own retirement benefit and a survivor benefit, you do not get both. You get the larger one. But in some situations you can collect one first and switch to the other later. For example, you might take the survivor benefit while your own benefit keeps growing until age 70. That can be a powerful strategy. Special needs children may be covered too. A child can generally receive 75 percent of the parent's benefit, though a family maximum may lower everyone's payment. There is also a one-time payment of $255 to a spouse or minor children. This is one of Jeff's F's, the F of Finance, which means making wise decisions with your money so it supports the life you want. It also touches Jeff's F of Family, because these choices protect the people you love. Because the survivor can receive up to 100 percent of the higher earner's benefit, the higher earner's claiming age matters for both spouses. Talk it through together before either of you claims. That is the heart of what matters most, most of the time: planning together, while you still can. If a loved one has passed, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 as soon as you can. You cannot apply for survivor benefits online, so plan on a phone appointment. If you were already getting spouse benefits, they switch to survivor benefits automatically, but you should still call about the $255 payment. Here are 3 takeaways that you can use right away. First, survivor benefits can be up to 100 percent of the worker's benefit, but claiming early can cut them to as little as 71.5 percent. Second, you receive the larger of your own benefit or the survivor benefit, not both, and you may be able to switch later. Third, call 1-800-772-1213 as soon as you can, because survivor benefits cannot be applied for online. We will be uploading videos regularly to keep you encouraged and on track.
