Every drill has a blind spot, and it is not the bit β it is the body. A standard drill needs roughly ten inches of clear line to reach a fastener; corners, frames and machine bases offer three. Until recently the options were ugly: unbolt the whole assembly, or own a dedicated right-angle drill that waits months between jobs. A slim bevel-gear head rewrites that trade β the motor stays outside, and only the working end drops into the gap. β» Key Features & Why It Works βͺ β» Two spiral bevel gears turn the corner. A pinion on the input shaft meshes with a crown gear on the output at exactly 90Β°. Well-built heads use helical-cut, hardened steel gears running on ball bearings; bargain versions use straight-cut pot metal that strips under load. Helical teeth hand off the load gradually, so power bends around the corner smoothly instead of hammering tooth by tooth. βͺ β» The torque question, answered honestly. Any 90Β° drive loses part of its torque to gear friction β commonly between a fifth and a third of the input. That sounds bad until you remember what steel wants anyway: low speed, high torque, steady feed. Drop the drill into low gear and the gear reduction swallows the loss β the bit slows down and the force goes up, which is exactly the deal steel cutting offers. βͺ β» The RPM ceiling protects the gears. Bevel-gear heads carry a rated speed limit β typically somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 RPM. Above it, the grease churns and the gear teeth overheat. Steel drilling lives at a fraction of that ceiling, so on metal the limit never comes into play. The number exists for hole saws in hardwood, not for a 6 mm bit in steel plate. βͺ β» The head is the whole trick. An all-metal housing resists flex under side load, and the bearings keep the output true so the bit does not wander off its punch mark. A single-sleeve keyless chuck allows one-handed bit changes while the other hand holds position in the gap. The whole head needs about three inches of clearance β roughly the space of your fist. The drill was never the problem; the geometry was. Bolt on a right-angle head and corners stop being dead ends β brackets, frame rails, machine bases, the spots that used to mean disassembly all become ordinary drilling. Same motor, same batteries, one bend in the shaft. Sometimes the smartest upgrade is not more power. It is access. Practical Notes: - Use low gear and low speed for steel β slow RPM and sharp HSS bits do the cutting; forcing does not. - Center-punch before drilling. The rigid head transmits side load straight to the bit, and a wandering bit walks fast in steel. - Snug the chuck hard. Side loads in tight quarters can spin a loose bit and chew the shank. - Expect a modest torque loss through the corner; compensate with the drill's low gear, not with more trigger. - Most attachments are not impact-driver rated β check the spec before mounting.
