Date filmed: Saturday the 15th of March 2025 Video filmed between 11:44 and 12:13 Route: Derby to Crewe Line - Tutbury & Hatton (TUT) Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing (MCB) Filming location: A511 Station Road, Hatton (DE65 5DW) A busy level crossing situated in between the trailing staggered platforms of Tutbury & Hatton Station in Hatton, Derbyshire. Remarkably, for audible warnings, this level crossing still retains its very loud external, continuously-ringing mechanical bells which are rare to find, yet are much more effective and clear with their message than many newer electronic alarms. Unfortunately, the 'BR Western Region' barriers here were replaced by these single-arm barriers back in 2020, so some authenticity has been lost even though it was needed sooner or later. The adjacent signal box controls this crossing, and you can see a semaphore signal in action (the crossing's 'protecting signal'), as well as hear levers and block bells due to the window being open. Imagine operating this crossing out the window with such a loud ringing bell that close to you though! Two activations and three trains are featured in this video, with some footage from my time here not included due to various interruptions and unpleasant encounters with passers by. Extra trains to Uttoxeter were running on this date due to the East Midlands Grand National - a high-profile horse racing event - on-going at Uttoxeter Racecourse, and these 'Meridian' sets were sent out to take well-dressed spectators to/from there. Two of these Class 222's feature here, with the first running empty back to the depot after finishing its service, and the second providing the last service to Uttoxeter before the main events started. It had literally only just cleared the crossing when the barriers were raised, and road traffic wasn't held up while it conducted station duties. It's unusual you see such a close margin between the back of the train and the crossing with raised barriers!
