I’m writing a book about Marion called The Beekeeper of McElvoy Canyon, and if you want to follow the search as it continues, click here: https://cerrogordo.kit.com/beekeeper I spent months researching my favorite story in this part of the desert. A story of a man who carved out his own life, creating cabins and huts in the most inaccessible canyon in California. In this video, I attempt to follow this journey. The result was by far the hardest hike I've ever been on. 8,000 feet of elevation gain, 9,000 feet of loss, dozens of waterfalls to rappel down, rattlesnakes to avoid, and more. But in the end, I left with an amazing story and appreciation for a man who chose to live by his own rules. Carve out his own life in one of the most remote canyons in the United States. The Beekeeper of McElvoy Canyon. If you want to read a written account of the adventure searching for the beekeeper, check out my blog post: https://brentunderwood.com/adventures/searching-for-the-beekeeper-of-mcelvoy-canyon/ Thank you to Heather Todd at the Eastern California Museum in Independence, CA for all the help researching Marion Howard. And thanks to Tim K for picking me up at the end of this thing! OnX is a must in the backcountry and this hike wouldn't have been possible without it.
