And this is a token of my appreciation... another story about history (at its most bleak). It was November 21, 1980 when a fire broke out in the kitchen area of an eatery that was not yet open on the casino level of the original MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Today it is Bally's Las Vegas. But on this day, almost 40 years ago, the MGM Grand brought us one of the greatest hotel tragedies in the history of America. Eighty-five people died as a result of this fire (many from inhaling the toxic smoke as it spread through the building) which spread all through the casino area and blew out the front entrance in a matter of minutes. A combination of poor construction on the building as well as a poorly planned out evacuation system led to mass chaos. This is the detailed story of this tragic event, with the information conveyed almost entirely taken from the official report done on the fire event.
