In 1187, the fate of Jerusalem changed forever. Nearly nine decades after the First Crusade captured Jerusalem, a Kurdish commander named Yusuf ibn Ayyub — better known to history as Saladin (Salah al-Din) — emerged as one of the most important Muslim leaders of the medieval world. But Saladin's journey to Jerusalem did not begin on the battlefield. This documentary-style historical story takes you back to the fragmented Muslim world of the 12th century — from the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad and the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt to the divided states of Syria and the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. We follow Saladin's extraordinary rise from the son of Najm al-Din Ayyub to a military commander under his uncle Shirkuh, his campaigns in Egypt, his appointment as Fatimid vizier in 1169, and the political transformation that eventually allowed him to unite Egypt and Syria. The story then moves to the dramatic events of 1187: Saladin's victory at the Battle of Hattin, the collapse of much of the Crusader Kingdom, the siege of Jerusalem, the role of Balian of Ibelin, and finally the surrender of the Holy City on 2 October 1187. Medieval sources record that the surrender involved negotiated ransom terms rather than a repeat of the mass killing associated with the Crusader capture of Jerusalem in 1099. At the same time, the surrender was not entirely bloodless or free from suffering: people who could not secure ransom were among those subjected to enslavement. The historical record therefore presents a much more complicated picture than either a simple “heroic legend” or a purely one-sided narrative. This video explores the history behind one of the most famous episodes of the Crusades, while separating established historical evidence from later traditions and legends. Sources & Historical References This video draws on a combination of medieval primary/near-contemporary accounts and modern historical scholarship, including: • Baha al-Din Ibn Shaddad — The Rare and Excellent History of Saladin, written by a close associate of Saladin and an important source for his later career. • Ibn al-Athir — an important Muslim chronicler whose account provides evidence for the political and military events surrounding Saladin and the Crusades. • Ernoul, associated with Balian of Ibelin, whose chronicle provides a Latin/Christian perspective on the siege and surrender of Jerusalem. • De Expugnatione Terrae Sanctae per Saladinum — a medieval Latin account of Saladin's capture of Jerusalem, preserved through the Medieval Sourcebook at Fordham University. • Modern historical works and reference material on Saladin, the Crusades, the Crusader States, Hattin, and the conquest of Jerusalem. Important: Medieval chronicles sometimes disagree on numbers, motives, and individual events. Where the evidence is uncertain, this video aims to distinguish historical evidence from later traditions.
