My book, The Times You Grew Up With, takes you back: https://paulmcallister.store In 1913, a physicist’s wife baked a sponge cake in a sawed-off battery jar. By 1919, Corning Glass Works had sold four million pieces of Pyrex. By midcentury, the decorated opalware — Butterprint, Gooseberry, Friendship — sat in nearly every American kitchen. The glass that started as a fix for shattering railroad lanterns became the mirror for the Palomar telescope and the most collected bakeware in history. Then Corning sold it all. The glass formula changed. The company changed hands, went bankrupt, merged with the Instant Pot, and went bankrupt again. Today there are two Pyrexes — one American, one European — made from different glass, by different companies, on different continents. Most people have no idea. This is the full story of Pyrex, Corning Glass Works, and the small city in upstate New York where a family dynasty turned sand into an empire.
