SEVILLE, SPAIN— The crash of an A400M Atlas transport plane in May this year was caused by the accidental deletion of crucial files during a software installation that caused three engines to fail, an investigation has concluded. The A400M is heavily computerized, with each of its four engines run individually by an Electronic Control Unit, which sends and receives data from the engines allowing it to interpret and optimize the pilot’s inputs. The ECUs use the “torque calibration parameters” to interpret data on the speed and force, or torque, of the propellers. Without these files, engine data is meaningless to the control units. Experts say that the the plane’s engines got stuck on a low power setting shortly after takeoff when the ECUs, unable to read the data from the propellers, registered a malfunction and went into a failsafe mode. While this was intended as a safety feature to limit the effect of one malfunctioning engine, it caused the simultaneous failure of three of the plane’s turboprops. As warning systems in the A400M are only active when the plane is in the air, the pilots were not aware of the problem until they were 400 metres above the ground. While attempting to make an emergency landing, the plane clipped a power line causing the pilots to lose control of the descent. Four of the six crew members died during the crash. The A400M was designed as a transport plane for NATO’s European partners. So far France, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia, and the UK have taken orders for the plane.
