A university born out of the freedom movement is now witnessing students going on hunger strike to demand the right to elect their own representatives. Jamia Millia Islamia, founded in 1920 during the Non-Cooperation Movement, has not held student union elections for nearly two decades. Since October 12, students have been protesting and demanding the restoration of their student union. The agitation has reportedly involved hunger strikes, allegations of violence by security personnel and disruptions to campus life, with classes shifted online. The administration has now assured students that elections will be held 15 days after the approval of a new student union constitution. However, no clear deadline has been announced for approving that constitution. Student unions are more than platforms for elections and slogans. They are spaces where young people learn democratic participation, representation, dissent and accountability. So why should students have to fight for the very democratic rights that universities teach them about? Is maintaining discipline a valid reason to keep elections suspended for so long? The demand is not simply for a student union. It is a demand for representation, participation and the right to have a voice.
