Sen. Wyden: Yes, the dedication is to my mom. A lot of people looked at it and said, "My goodness, the mother and the son look exactly alike." My parents fled the Nazis in the ā30sānot all got out. My dad was one of the famous Richie Boys, the German kids who wrote pamphlets dropped on the Nazis, telling them to give up. My mother was in the Army. I dedicated the book to her memory because she and a small number of Jewish women basically told their spouses, their grandfathers, and all the people they could contact that they were underestimating Hitler. For the most part, they were in denial. They thought he was just a nut who would go away. I dedicated the book to my mom because Iām convinced that if she and those few Jewish women hadnāt done what they didāblowing the whistle on the real danger of HitlerāI wouldnāt be here having a chance to enjoy The Thom Hartmann Show. Thom: Yeah, well, and your parents fled before they got swept up in the Holocaust. Sen. Wyden: We lost family at Theresienstadt. I go through all of that in the book. It also forms a little of my thinking. You know, Thom, my shady pastāI wanted to play in the NBA. I thought I could do it. I didnāt pay as much attention to what my dad said back then as I was dribbling my way through life for years on end. One thing he said that has always stayed with me was this: what they feared most in Nazi Germany was the knock on the door. The knock was an indication they were being picked up. I always asked my papa, "How did people know who those people were, where they lived, and how to get in touch with them?" That leads me to another book my dad wrote, Stella, a true story about a beautiful blonde woman who, when all the other Jews left, stayed behind and turned Jews over to the Nazis. Thom: Wow. Sen. Wyden: And we also know thatāthere was a book about it, I thinkāan American company, IBM, played a role in keeping track of the Jews. Thom: We have just a little less than a minute before a quick break, and then weāll continue our conversation. One of the more common questions I get from callers is, "When will I know itās time to flee the United States?" Do you have any thoughts on that? Sen. Wyden: You know, Thom, I wrote this book because I believe weāve got grassroots powerānot just progressive Democrats but also many Republicans who donāt like Trump, and a lot of independents too. I think we can take our principles back. Whatās so ominous about Trump is his values and what heās done to distort them. But weāre going to be part of a grassroots juggernautāa coalition of the public and private sectors. Weāre not just going to sit around and take off. Iām for staying and fighting. Thom: Yeah, Iām with you.
