Sen. Wyden: Yes, the dedication is to my mom. A lot of people looked at it and said, "My goodness, the mother and the son look exactly alike." My parents fled the Nazis in the ’30s—not all got out. My dad was one of the famous Richie Boys, the German kids who wrote pamphlets dropped on the Nazis, telling them to give up. My mother was in the Army. I dedicated the book to her memory because she and a small number of Jewish women basically told their spouses, their grandfathers, and all the people they could contact that they were underestimating Hitler. For the most part, they were in denial. They thought he was just a nut who would go away. I dedicated the book to my mom because I’m convinced that if she and those few Jewish women hadn’t done what they did—blowing the whistle on the real danger of Hitler—I wouldn’t be here having a chance to enjoy The Thom Hartmann Show. Thom: Yeah, well, and your parents fled before they got swept up in the Holocaust. Sen. Wyden: We lost family at Theresienstadt. I go through all of that in the book. It also forms a little of my thinking. You know, Thom, my shady past—I wanted to play in the NBA. I thought I could do it. I didn’t pay as much attention to what my dad said back then as I was dribbling my way through life for years on end. One thing he said that has always stayed with me was this: what they feared most in Nazi Germany was the knock on the door. The knock was an indication they were being picked up. I always asked my papa, "How did people know who those people were, where they lived, and how to get in touch with them?" That leads me to another book my dad wrote, Stella, a true story about a beautiful blonde woman who, when all the other Jews left, stayed behind and turned Jews over to the Nazis. Thom: Wow. Sen. Wyden: And we also know that—there was a book about it, I think—an American company, IBM, played a role in keeping track of the Jews. Thom: We have just a little less than a minute before a quick break, and then we’ll continue our conversation. One of the more common questions I get from callers is, "When will I know it’s time to flee the United States?" Do you have any thoughts on that? Sen. Wyden: You know, Thom, I wrote this book because I believe we’ve got grassroots power—not just progressive Democrats but also many Republicans who don’t like Trump, and a lot of independents too. I think we can take our principles back. What’s so ominous about Trump is his values and what he’s done to distort them. But we’re going to be part of a grassroots juggernaut—a coalition of the public and private sectors. We’re not just going to sit around and take off. I’m for staying and fighting. Thom: Yeah, I’m with you.
