My friend Paul and I shot and produced this video and met Mr. Kelley backstage afterwards. It was a great experience. He was a very kind man. Of course you know he played Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the Original Series and was known for the line "He's dead, Jim." In 1994, Paul Rosa and I interviewed DeForest Kelley, Star Trek's "Dr. McCoy" at a convention in San Francisco. Until now, this interview has been "lost" on old video tapes and hard drives. Paul has kindly allowed it to appear for the first time online on The Life Arts Network. Unfortunately, my life-long friend (and host of this video) Paul Rosa passed away unexpectedly due to heart complications at his home in San Ramon, California, on Nov. 25, 2025. Paul will be remembered as a talented artist, supportive father and grandfather, and a generous friend to many. DeForest Kelley (1920ā1999) was an American actor best known for playing Dr. Leonard āBonesā McCoy in Star Trek. Born in Toccoa, Georgia, he grew up in a Baptist family and initially wanted to become a doctor, but financial limitations led him toward entertainment. He developed his singing abilities through church and radio performances before pursuing acting. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, Kelley moved permanently to California and began building an acting career. He appeared in films such as Fear in the Night, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and Warlock, as well as numerous television Westerns and dramas. He was frequently cast as villains but also played doctors and military officers, gaining extensive experience before Star Trek. In 1966, Kelley joined Star Trek as Dr. Leonard McCoy, becoming one of the show's three central characters alongside William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. He continued as McCoy through the original series, the animated series, six feature films, and a cameo in Star Trek: The Next Generation. His portrayal of the compassionate, sometimes skeptical doctor became one of the franchise's most enduring characters. Kelley was known as a shy and private person and remained close friends with Shatner and Nimoy. He died in 1999, and his authorized biography, From Sawdust to Stardust, was published posthumously in 2005. #startrek #deforestkelley #drmccoy #bonesmccoy #spock #ussenterprise #hesdeadjim #bonesmccoy #startrektos #startrekconvention #ussenterprisecrew #ncc1701 #starcon #williamshatner #leonardnimoy #jamestkirk #scotty #mrscott #mrsulu #mrchekov #pavelchekov #uhura #nursechapel #startrekpoetry #nichellenichols #nextgeneration #startrekconvention #trekkies #ehrlich #westernmovies #generoddenberry DeForest Kelley meets Gene Roddenberry for first time.
