The 6.6L LBZ Duramax diesel has become one of the most legendary diesel engines GM ever put in a pickup truck, and there are some very good reasons why. When the LBZ arrived, it made serious power for its time and significantly stepped things up compared to the competition. GM strengthened the engine, addressed many of the issues seen with the earlier LB7 and LLY Duramax generations, and paired it with the excellent six-speed Allison 1000 transmission. But arguably the biggest reason for the LBZ's reputation is timing. It was one of the final Duramax diesels before the arrival of the diesel particulate filter, and its production run was incredibly short.
