A routine flight. A request to climb. Then a terrifying Mayday. What happened aboard Learjet 60 N722BD before it crashed near Palm Beach? In this video, I examine the ATC recordings, available flight data, and the sequence of events—from reports of icing and turbulence to the aircraft’s rapid descent. We’ll look at: - The crew’s request to climb from 35,000 to 37,000 feet - What estimated airspeed data can—and cannot—tell us - How icing can reduce an aircraft’s performance and stall margin - An earlier altitude-deviation incident involving the same aircraft near Teterboro - Cockpit coordination and the lessons pilots can take from this tragedy I’m Stan Dunn, and this is Flying for Money. My aim is to understand the decisions and conditions involved while keeping the people aboard in mind. The cause has not been established. This is a pilot’s analysis of the available information. Simulator scenes are illustrative recreations using a Citation CJ4 stand-in; calculated airspeed is an estimate, not recorded cockpit indicated airspeed.
