Co-written with Andy Blissett and Lucinda Drayton and produced by The Joy Brothers, the piano-house track was first released on the Wolverhampton label Cleveland City in November 1993 and sank without trace. A 1994 re-release — licensed to All Around The World and given a new lease of life by a Joy Brothers remix — completely changed its fortunes. It entered the UK Singles Chart on 9 April 1994 and climbed to number one on 1 May, holding the top spot for a week and spending 13 weeks on the chart in total — turning a part-time musician into a chart-topper almost overnight. The Real Thing also reached number 4 in Belgium, number 13 in France and number 32 in the Netherlands, made the top 20 in Ireland and Spain, hit number 3 on Canada’s RPM Dance chart and reached the top 40 on the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart. It was nominated for Tune of the Year at the 1994 International Dance Awards. The accompanying music video was filmed in Spain.
