Sometimes a crane job starts with a nice, organized plan. And sometimes it starts with a truck driver showing up at a school at nearly midnight on a Friday, demanding to be unloaded immediately, and threatening to take the playground equipment all the way back to Texas if nobody could figure it out. This video is the second kind. A local school was having a brand-new playground structure delivered, and the assembly crew had spent the entire day waiting for the truck that was supposed to bring it. The driver never showed, so eventually everybody gave up and went home. Then, close to midnight, the phone rang. The driver was finally at the school, and apparently after being late all day, he was now in a VERY big hurry. The crew rushed back over, only to discover one small problem: the 16-foot-long crates containing the playground structure had been shoved lengthwise into the back of a box van trailer instead of being loaded onto a flatbed where a forklift could simply pick them off. So now they had a driver demanding to be unloaded immediately, cargo that couldn’t actually be unloaded the normal way, and a rapidly developing Friday-night disaster. After a few frantic phone calls, they came up with a temporary solution. A local cold-storage warehouse let them use a loading dock, and the crates were basically dragged out of the back of the trailer with a chain and pulled into the building. Problem solved, right? Of course not. The truck driver left, apparently completely satisfied that the disaster he had delivered was now somebody else’s problem. One of the crates weighed about 4,500 pounds. The warehouse forklift was rated for 3,000 pounds. The crates were about 16 feet long. And the warehouse doorway was only about 12 feet wide. So the playground equipment was technically unloaded… but now it was stuck inside the building. And it needed to be at the school Monday morning so the assembly crew could actually start putting the playground together. Luckily, somebody called Quick Crane. I headed over on Sunday with my Palfinger knuckle boom crane truck, and this turned out to be exactly the kind of weird problem that made me want to start this business in the first place. Instead of needing a separate forklift, crane, truck, and trailer, I was able to use the Palfinger’s reach and articulation to reach inside the warehouse through the doorway, pick each crate up, rotate it lengthwise, carefully pull it through the smaller opening, swing it around, and set it directly onto my trailer. One truck. One crane. One trailer. And four giant crates that went from “completely stuck” to “loaded and headed where they were supposed to be.” Once everything was secured, I hauled the entire load over to the school, where we finally got to unload it the way this whole thing probably should have happened in the first place—with a telehandler. Remove it. Lift it. Rotate it. Load it. Haul it. All with one rig. This is EXACTLY the kind of job I started Quick Crane for.
