On May 29th, 1453, Constantinople fell to the armies of Mehmed II. Constantine XI, the last Roman emperor, died in the fighting, and one of Christianity's oldest cities passed into Ottoman hands. Europe knew the attack was coming. Europe sent almost nothing. This is not a story about indifference. It is a story about a continent that had spent 400 years crusading against Muslim armies and then, when the moment finally came, made a series of perfectly rational decisions that doomed the city anyway. The Fourth Crusade had already sacked Constantinople once. The disasters at Nicopolis and Varna had killed European appetite for crusading for good.
