Make a wish on Yoko's Wish Tree at https://wishtreeforyokoono.com John: There’s a song I wrote in 1968 called ‘Oh Yoko!’ - an easy come, easy go song – like whistling down the lane to meet your lover: ‘She’s mine and I’m always singing/ thinking/being/about her.’ It came naturally. My most happy moments are since I met Yoko. The simplest way of saying what Yoko is to me is that before we met, we were half a person. There is a myth about people being half and the other half being in the sky or in heaven or something, or the other side of the universe, or the mirror image bit. We are two halves and together we are a whole. Half the way I’m thinking – musically, philosophically and every other way – is her influence both as a woman and an artist. My biography now reads: ‘Born, lived and met Yoko.’ Whatever I went through was worth it to meet Yoko. So, if I had to do all the things I did in my life – which is have a troubled childhood, a troubled teenage life and an amazing whirlwind life with the Beatles, and then finally coming to land meeting Yoko – it was worth it. Yoko is the beginning of life for me. Yoko: Between us, we were very psychic. We knew all the time what the other was thinking, what was going to be said by the other, our responses, everything. It was sometimes unnerving. John: We both think alike. We’ve both been alone. And we seem to have had the same kind of dreams when we were alone. I can see now that I always dreamed of a woman like this one coming into my life. You can’t go out looking for this kind of relationship. It’s like somebody was planning it from above. Yoko: Yes, it was hard, but he and I had no doubt we would get through. John’s excitement at doing things together with me as an artist was so obvious that he didn’t have that much time to get upset about what people were thinking. John: We’d like to be remembered as the Romeo and Juliet of the 1970s. Yoko: When people get cynical about love, they should look at us and see that it is possible. John: There is nothing more important than our relationship, nothing. We dig being together all the time, and both of us could survive apart, but what for? I’m not going to sacrifice love, real love, for any fuckin’ whore, or any friend, or any business, because in the end, you’re alone at night. Neither of us want to be, and you can’t fill the bed with groupies. I don’t want to be a swinger. Like I said in the song, I’ve been through it all, and nothing works better than to have somebody you love hold you. I’m completely positive, and when I’m negative I’ve got Yoko who is just as strong as me. And it helps. And this is only the beginning. The Sixties were just waking up in the morning and we haven’t even got to dinner time yet and I can’t wait. I’m so glad to be around and it’s just going to be great and there’s going to be more and more of us, and whatever you’re thinking there, Mrs Grundy of South Birmingham- on-Toast, you don’t stand a chance: (a) you’re not going to be there when we’re running it and (b) you’re gonna like it when you get less frightened of it. My ultimate goal is for Yoko and I to be happy and try and make other people happy through our happiness. I’d like everyone to remember us with a smile. But, if possible, just as John & Yoko who created world peace forever.
