The blanket octopus is one of the least studied and most visually striking creatures in the ocean. What science has documented about it so far is genuinely difficult to believe. Females can grow up to 6 feet in length, roughly the height of an average adult human. Males grow to just 1 inch, smaller than a walnut. The weight difference between male and female is at least 10,000 times and potentially up to 40,000 times, the largest size dimorphism in the entire animal kingdom. During mating, the male detaches his third arm, called the hectocotylus, which carries a sperm filled pouch. He hands it to the female and dies shortly after. He is so small and so rare that no human ever observed a live male blanket octopus in the open ocean until 2002. Before that, males were only known from dead specimens found in predator stomachs or washed up on beaches. The female's hunting strategy is equally remarkable. Scientists have recorded females ripping the venomous tentacles off the Portuguese Man o' War, a highly venomous siphonophore often confused with a jellyfish, and wielding them as weapons against prey. The blanket octopus is immune to the Man o' War's venom, which makes this possible. The large cape trailing behind the female, the blanket the species is named after, is not decoration. It is a defence mechanism. When threatened, she unfurls it to appear larger. If a predator bites into it, it detaches and she escapes. Sources: National Geographic, Blanket Octopus Facts.
