In 1864, Paraguay had a railway, a shipyard, an iron foundry and one of the largest armies in South America. Six years later, its capital was occupied, its leader was dead, and by most modern estimates it had lost between half and two-thirds of its people. The War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) pitted one small, landlocked republic against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. It was the deadliest war between nations in Latin American history, and outside South America almost no one has heard of it. How did it start, why did Paraguay refuse to surrender, and why is it so rarely remembered? Population figures for this war are disputed. We present the main scholarly estimates as ranges, and the different ways Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina remember it.
