Popular in the north of the country, the game was rarely played in the Afghan capital during the Taliban's five-year rule. 0002 Like many things, Buzkashi was frowned upon under the Taliban. Now the game is back to celebrate the end of the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice. The origins of Buzkashi are lost in the mists of time. The game is similar to polo - but instead of a ball, teams of men on horseback fight over a headless goat. In this game, a team from Kabul is playing a team from the Panjshir valley in the northeast of the country. 0027 It's a rough and tumble contest requiring all the legendary skills of the Afghan horseman, although the rules are rather obscure. 0034 There were hundreds of people present. Even interim Afghan Defence Minister Mohammad Fahim came along. 0042 In spite of the fierce competition evident on the playing field, there is no official scorekeeper. Unofficially, though, it was the Panjshiris who dominated the game and took the honours. What happened to the goat is not known.
