CHECK OUT OUR SOLAR WITH THIS LINK https://affiliate.signaturesolar.com/shop/WoodysBarndominium?category=quqamlr8 We’re the Woodworths! A husband and wife team building an off grid homestead in the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas. And in this video we’re going to show you how we keep food, water, and power around here, AND what we do with our waste. FOOD We didn’t have power out here while we were building our solar hub, and it gets HOT in this part of the US so we were constantly running through Ice in our cooler. After 8-9 moths of relying on coolers and burning through our stash of home-canned meat, we got this… - This is a portable refrigerator. Its the same size as the cooler we were using before, BUT because it doesn’t need to contain ice, we actually have more useable space in it than we did in the cooler. POWER Lets break this one into 2 segments… POWER PART 1… before solar Until just a couple of weeks ago, we were running strictly off our generator out here. We chose this dual fuel model and have run it exclusively on propane mostly to avoid having to clean the carburetor. The generator has been invaluable. We use it to charge batteries for tools, charge our big marine battery to keep some power in the cabin, and when storms hit in town and power was knocked out for several days, we were able to keep the fridge and freezers running for our family in town. rechargeable power station its basically a big rechargeable battery with every port or plug you could hope for built in. Like the portable fridge, theres a ton of options on the market, but we were sent this one to try and after a year of use, we have some thoughts. The handle and wheels seem like they were meant for a child’s suitcase. This this thing weighs 100 pounds and is super awkward to move. POWER PART 2… after solar The roof of this shipping container building is facing directly south so that our 32 panels get the most amount of sun possible. Our panels are 370 watts each theoretically, If all 32 panels are charging at 100% we’re bringing in nearly 12,000 watts our panels are run in 2 groups 16 panels per group and they send power to this EG4 inverter, from the inverter, power flows into this bank of batteries If we plug into the system during the day when the sun is shining, the inverter automatically pulls power from the panels, so that the batteries can maintain their charge. this makes it so that we can run off of battery power when the sun is down. WATER We have a well, a 700 foot deep well…but we dont use it. Its not that we dont want to use it, we just havent had the chance to finish setting it up, thats coming soon, but in the meantime, here’s how we handle water. THIS is our tiny baby water tower It’s a 250 gallon IBC tote on a platform. Uphill from the cabin. …And it isnt all that great, but we’re making it work. We get water here by loading up 2 of these totes, Driving to a friend’s house, Filling them up, Driving them back, And then refilling the tote on top of the tower. We can lift it with the excavator and just pour water in. water flows through this 1 inch pipe down to the cabin. This is what that water pressure…or lack of water pressure looks like on full blast. When we re-do our water situation this year, we’ll make some big improvements like - Tapping into a bigger 3,000 gal tank - Move the tank farther up the hill AND put it on a riser - we’ll also Run new 2 inch pex, that cuts down to 1 inch when it reaches the cabin WASTE low tech composting toilet system - You get a 5 gallon bucket - Put down a layer of dry wood shavings or ash in the bucket - Do everything just like you normally would - Then cover all the business with another layer of shavings or ash. As long as everything’s covered, you shouldn’t be able to smell it. If you can, then I recommend using a more fragrant shaving like cedar, but remember, you need it to be dry. - Once the bucket is full, you take it outside, put a lid on it, and let is sit for as long as you want. - While the buckets are sitting the contents are actively decomposing. - When youre ready, build compost pile and start dumping the buckets into it, you’ll have a great compost for trees. TRASH A lot of folks living off grid or just out in the country dont get trash service. We’re in that boat, they wouldn’t come out here if we begged, SO we take whatever trash we dont want to burn, into town.
