Lomekwi 3 stone tools Oldowan Homo habilis Acheulean handaxes West Turkana — what archaeology shows about the earliest known stone toolmakers, about 3.3 million years ago in Kenya. This episode argues that the first widely cited stone tools were not elegant handaxes, but controlled breaks: hammerstones, cores, anvils, scars, and sharp flakes. We follow the evidence from Lomekwi 3 to later Oldowan toolkits, and look carefully at what cut marks, hippo bones, and flake edges can and cannot prove. It also corrects a common shortcut: Homo habilis used Oldowan tools, but the oldest known stone artifacts are older than any toolmaker we can confidently name as Homo. What survives in stone may be only part of the story, since wood, fiber, skin, and plant tools usually vanish from the archaeological record.
