How can you tell if someone is lying? Retired Secret Service agent, Brad Beeler, explains how to spot a liar and why most of what you've heard about lie detection is wrong. In this episode of Explainer for a Stranger, Isaac asks Brad how to tell when someone isn't telling the truth. Brad breaks down his LIARS method: latency, incongruence, avoidance, resistance and shifting vocal inflection. He explains why the truth works like a movie reel you can rewind and fast-forward, why words like "normally", "usually" and "typically" should act as a check engine light, and why a "no" that sounds like a question is a red flag. Isaac then puts his new skills to the test with a game of two truths and a lie, using follow-up questions to work out which of Brad's stories is made up. Brad also busts some common lie-detection myths: liars often make better eye contact than truthful people, and body language and eye direction are poor predictors of deception. Brad shares how to create an environment where people feel able to tell the truth, from "soft eyes" and handshakes to picking the right time and place for a difficult conversation. He also explains how polygraphs actually work, whether you can beat a lie detector test, and how he approaches sociopaths and psychopaths in interrogations. That includes the case where he let a suspect talk for two hours about a person who didn't exist. Do you think you'd be able to tell if someone was lying to you? Let us know in the comments.
