In this lesson, I ask a question Kenya has never adequately answered: what was actually wrong with the 8-4-4 education system? I argue that Kenya did not need to scrap 8-4-4; it needed honest leadership, investment in teachers, better assessment, modernized content and patient reform. Instead, we replaced a system that had served the country for decades with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), while many of the problems supposedly caused by the old curriculum simply reappeared in a new form—teacher overload, parental pressure, inadequate preparation, high costs and administrative confusion. I examine the politics, corruption, procurement interests and institutional failures surrounding curriculum reform in Kenya, and ask whether CBC represents genuine educational transformation or simply another expensive cycle of reform. Most importantly, I challenge parents and young people to look beyond educational slogans and ask who actually benefits when Kenya repeatedly replaces its curriculum instead of fixing the governance failures surrounding education.
